Wiz Khalifa dons a custom fur coat, striped skinny jeans and gold jewelry for his new O.N.I.F.C. album cover. The Pittsburgh native looks kinda like a 2012, Hip Hop version of guitar legend Jimi Hendrix…but that’s exactly the look he was going for.
The look, created by wardrobe stylist Fatima B, was created for Wiz’ newest album, O.N.I.F.C. O.N.I.F.C is the follow-up disc to his last album Rolling Papers. Fatima says Wiz wanted a look that conveyed a “’70s’ vibe.” You know that “sleazy, rock star-type image” musicians like Hendrix and Zeppelin embraced.
While Fatima successfully pulled the Hendrix-Zeppelin inspired look off, Hip Hop critics have slammed Wiz and Fatima for stepping outside the Hip Hop norm–fashionably speaking. Fatima understands the criticism noting:
“I can understand both sides of people getting it or not getting it. It’s like Kelis [paving the way with her style] six years ago and you see all these artists now [mimicking it].”
“We wanted to give people a shock, but it wasn’t just that,” she insists. “We wanted people to understand the music, his attitude, the weed-smoking, the hippies, the festivals… All of that played into the album cover. It’s like a whole lifestyle in a booklet.”
According to Fatima, Wiz has been morphing into the “sleazy rock star” image for 2 years …since he started working with the innovative stylist. She says,
“If you see how Wiz dresses now, it already gives you this whole hippie feel,” Fatima adds. “This whole ’70s vibe. This sleazy, rock star-type image. This is what we wanted it to be and we wanted people to see the transition from how Wiz used to dress, up until now. This is where we’re at with the album, the music. It all goes together.”
Fatima B. has also styled rappers Trina, Ja Rule, and Nipsey Hustle.
What do you think of Wiz Khalifa’s Hendrix-Zeppelin inspired new style? Can you dig it???
