What happens when an amazingly talented musician with crazy potential meets significant opportunity prematurely??? DISASTER!!!
Azealia Banks held the rap world in her hands just a few months ago. With so many looking for a fresh take on Hip Hop Music, and so many seeking musical refuge in someone other than Nicki Minaj, Azealia could have ruled the next few years of not only rap, but pop culture.
With co-signs from major artists and glowing reviews from entertainment bloggers, Azealia had the Rap Industry in her hands. She could have been a major player in Hip Hop, but Azealia (while talented) is too immature (at this point) to be a star.
Instead of spending her time in the studio creating world-changing music, Azealia was often found on Twitter banging out disparaging Tweets about her Hip Hop competitors including, Iggy Azalea and T.I.
Example. When Azealia was overlooked for the 2012 XXL Freshman Class Cover Shoot (an honor given to newbie rappers who are on the cusp of Hip Hop stardom), Azealia hopped on Twitter to bash XXL’s decision to feature Iggy over her.
And, Azealia’s biting words often lit up Twitter-verse. She seemed to enjoy stirring up controversy with Tweets like,
“Everyone knows Lil Kim doesn’t write her own raps…”
“@tip (Rapper T.I.) Ain’t you the same dude that got photographed butt naked in a pair of sneakers and a beanie?!?!?”
“@kraeyshawn (Rap Newcomer Kraeyshawn) you’re a dumb b*tch. And you can’t rap! I’ll sit on your face…Fall back sl*t!”
@necolebitchie (Celebrity Blogger) everything u stand for is corny. U have no angle
Like Kanye West a few years ago, Azealia uses her popularity and Internet influence to rant about every little slight she (feels she) undeservedly received. And like Kanye West circa 2008, what started out as interesting commentary from a popular rap artist is beginning to sound a lot like the Diary of a Spoiled Brat.
Azealia’s talent is surpassed only by her ego AND that ego is the reason Azealia Banks isn’t (and probably won’t) winning in this rap Game.
The Music Business is and always has been about creating relationships with other power players and then maintaining those relationships over time. It is as important for an artist to make allies in music as it is for an artist to put make hit records.
The other day, Azealia parted ways with notable Music Manager Troy Carter who currently manages young super group Mindless Behavior and who reportedly also manages Mama Monster Lady Gaga. Although Troy claims the two parted ways amicably, Azealia posted a series of Tweets (prior to deleting her account) that reveal the parting may not have been very amicable.
“I will definitely be working BY MYSELF and saving MY 20% On management commissions while I avoid you sharks in the water….
I really want a female manager. Women are just so much smarter.
I just want a really hardcore woman…Or a really gay man as my manager…You other n-ggas have WAY too much ego sh-t with y’all.”
Everything can get old and tired…even a rapper-on-the-rise with incredible potential. Just ask Kanye? The stunt he pulled interrupting Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech to praise Beyoncé almost cost him his career.
Like Kanye a few years ago, Azealia’s career is hanging off of a slippery slope. If she doesn’t get control of her emotions and learn how to roll with the punches (that come along with any high-profile career), she could wind up an Unsung Artist best known for a few clever freestyles and a potty mouth…
